Aging Gracefully…And Listen to this Podcast

Erin RuefMost Recent, personal growth

I have been thinking about aging and the next chapter of my life over the last few weeks. I turn 48 in a few days – birthdays seem to increasingly cause reflection as I grow older, but in a good way. Plus, my incredible tribe of Sheehan cousins has a group text where I was asked darling questions such as “do you start to tour retirement homes this year”. Which made me laugh and pause for a brief second.

Truth is, I like growing older and hope to age gracefully.

Or as gracefully as possible.

I am certain that I have never felt so at peace, centered, and happy in as many ways as possible as I do today.

And as my Dad recently reminded me, all of that has to come from within. No one can “make you happy”.

So do I know the trick to aging gracefully? Absolutely not.

But am I starting to master the art of embracing the good in life?

I think so.

And being in this place makes me excited for all the future still (hopefully) holds. I have a wonderful husband who is my favorite person to spend time with, and we laugh often. It is really fun to have older children and watch them start to fly and evolve. We are all in good health, and we have everything that we need to live well enough. I have learned over the last year as to the high value there is in moving through life with family and friends that show up for you, and vice versa. And I am fortunate to have a mighty circle of that in my life. Lastly, I can’t think of a single situation or person in my life that I am not at peace with, so I am carrying no negative weight in my heart.

Maybe that is the point of all of it? Love, happiness, and good health (emotionally and physically)? Perhaps that is the way to orient around a path to age gracefully.

As a last topic, I implore you to listen to this podcast. My smart and lovely colleague, Tracy Martin, sent this to me earlier this week. I was floored when I took the time to listen to it. There are some incredible things happening in medicine and science to help women live more fully for the last half or third of their lives. Every woman needs to listen to this to know how to advocate for that for yourself. I promise that it will be worth your time.

So cheers to all the future holds, my FBF friends.

And let me know of any compelling retirement tours that I should know about….
